Chemistry- the modern periodic table (year 9) Flashcards
How many elements are there?
over 100
How is the periodic table set out?
In order of increasing atomic number
where are metals and non metals found?
metals are found to the left and non metals are found to the right
What do elements with similar properties do?
they form columns
What are the vertical columns called?
groups
What does the group number tell you?
how many electrons there are in the outer shell
What can you make predictions about?
trends in reactivity the properties of different elements when you know one of them
What happens in group 1 elements?
the elements react more vigorously as you go down the group
What happens in the group 7 elements?
the reactivity decreases as you go down the group
What are the rows called?
periods. Each new period represents another full shell of electrons
