2
Q

What happens with the solution?

A

It gets heated and parts of the solution that has the lowest boiling points evaporates first

Q

What happens to the vapor?

A

It gets cooled and condenses (turns back into a liquid) and it is collected

Q

What is the problem with simple distillation?

A

you can only use it to separate things with very different boiling points- if the temp goes higher than the boiling point of the substance with the higher boiling point, they will be mixed again

Q

What do you do if you have a mixture of liquids with similar boiling points?

A

You need another method to separate them like fractional distillation

Q

How do you do fractional distillation?

A

You put your mixture in a flask and stick a fractionating column on top and then you heat it
