Chemistry- Distillation (year 9) Flashcards
What is simple distillation used for?
for separating out a liquid from a solution
What happens with the solution?
It gets heated and parts of the solution that has the lowest boiling points evaporates first
What happens to the vapor?
It gets cooled and condenses (turns back into a liquid) and it is collected
What happens to the rest of the solution?
is gets left behind in the flask
What is the problem with simple distillation?
you can only use it to separate things with very different boiling points- if the temp goes higher than the boiling point of the substance with the higher boiling point, they will be mixed again
What do you do if you have a mixture of liquids with similar boiling points?
You need another method to separate them like fractional distillation
If you have a mixture of liquids then…
you can separate it using fractional distillation
How do you do fractional distillation?
You put your mixture in a flask and stick a fractionating column on top and then you heat it
What happens to the different liquids?
They will all have different boiling points
What happens to the liquid with the lowest boiling point?
it will evaporate first
