Chemistry- Metals and non metals (year 9) Flashcards
What are metals?
elements which can form positive ions when they react
Where are metals located on the periodic table?
towards the bottom and to the left of the table
most elements in the periodic table are what?
metals
Where are non-metals in the periodic table?
are at the far right and top of the table
What don’t non metals do?
form positive ions when they react
What does the electronic structure of atoms do?
they affect how they react
What do atoms generally do?
they react to from a full outer shell
Metals to the left of the periodic table don’t have what?
they do not have many electrons to remove- metals towards the bottom of the periodic table have a weaker attraction
What happens with non metals?
when forming a positive ion, it is much more difficult
What do all metals have?
metallic bonding which causes them to have similar basic physical properties
What are metals great at?
conducting heat and electricity
Where can transition metals be found?
between group 2 and 3
Where are transition metals based?
In the centre of the periodic table
How many ions can transition metals have?
more than 1
