Chemistry- Mixtures + Chromatography (year 9) Flashcards
Where is there no chemical bond?
Between the different parts of a mixture
What can parts of a mixture be?
either elements or compounds
How can the mixture be separated?
by physical methods such as filtration, crystalisation, simple distillation, fractional distillation and chromatography
What is air?
a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon
What is crude oil?
a mixture of different length hydrocarbon molecules
What can chromatography be used for?
it can be used to separate different dyes in an ink
What do you do first for the experiment?
Draw a pencil line near the bottoms of a sheet of filtered paper
What do you do second for the experiment?
Add a spot of the ink to the line and place the sheet in a beaker of solvent
What do you have to make sure you do during the experiment?
Make sure the ink is not touching the solvent
What happens once the experiment starts to work?
The solvent seeps up the paper, carrying the ink with it
What does insoluble mean?
it wont dissolve
What is the end results of chromatography?
a pattern of spots
