Q

What is water?

A

Most abundant of all pure substances. Contains dissolved minerals and bacteria. Water that contains minerals will conduct electricity. Distilled water will not. Water is a colorless and tasteless liquid

Q

What is the universal solvent and why?

A

Water is known as the universal solvent because it has the ability to dissolve more substances than any other solvent

Q

What is the pH of skin?

A
  • The acid mantle ranges between 4.5-6.2 (5.5 avg)
  • Only products that contain water have a pH
  • Some products will have ingredients to naturally balance the skin’s pH, other lines will incorporate toners to perform the balancing function

Q

What is the Acid Mantle Barrier?

A
  • The skin’s natural protective barrier
-The acid mantle runs at an acidic range to protect the body from potential exposure to pathogens. Clean, unbroken skin is the body’s first line of defense against bad bacteria, injury, and disease

16
Q

What is the pH range for Acids?

A

0-6 (below 7)

17
Q

What is the pH for Neutral?

A

7

18
Q

What is the pH range for Alkaline?

A

8-14 (above 7)

19
Q

What does pH stand for?

A

Potential Hydrogen

20
Q

What are solutions?

A

A mixture of solutes and solvents that do not separate

21
Q

What is a suspension?

A

Liquid mixture of immiscible material. The molecules do not intermix, but rather separate. If the particles are large, it’s a suspension. If the particles are small, it’s a colloid.

22
Q

What is an Emulsion?

A

Mixture of two or more immiscible substances with the help of a binder (emulsifier) (ingredient used to stabilize the bond of other ingredients). Eventually this mixture will separate over time.

23
Q

What are Miscible liquids?

A

Mutually soluble, meaning that they can be mixed together to form solutions

24
Q

oil droplets dispersed in water are what kind of emulsion?

A

oil-in-water emulsion
