What is an Oxidation reaction?
- Gaining oxygen
- Losing electrons
What is a reduction reaction?
- Gain of Electrons
- Loss of oxygen
What is a redox reaction?
- One of the reactants oxidises
- One of the other reactants reduces
- BOTH have happened
What is a displacement reaction?
- When a more reactive element steals from a less reactive element
What is Thermal decomposition?
- Using heat to break down a substance
What is dynamic equilibrium in a reversible reaction?
- Rate of forward reaction = Rate of backward reaction
- The reactions happen simultaneously
- Concentration of products and reactants are constant
What is a reversible reaction?
- The forward and backwards reaction occur at the same time
What is a combustion reaction?
- Combustion happens when a substance reacts with oxygen when burned in air (oxygen)
What is a subsitution reaction?
- When one atom replaces another (H being replaced by Br)
What is an addition reaction?
- When an atom is added to an unsaturated molecule
What is a cracking reaction?
- A large hydrocarbon being broken down into smaller chain hydrocarbons (two one alkane and one alkene)
- It needs a catalyst of Aluminium oxide and 650 degrees temperature
What is a neutralisation reaction?
- Acid + Base / Alkali —> Salt + Water
