Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What is an example of covalent bonding?
Carbon dioxide
What is an example of ionic bonding?
Sodium chloride
What kind of atoms does covalent bonding take place in?
between non-metals
What kind of atoms does ionic bonding take place in?
between metals and non-metals
What is the solubility of covalent compounds?
insoluble in water,
soluble in organic solvents
What is the solubility of ionic compounds?
soluble in water
What is the melting & boiling points in a covalent compound?
Low MP and BP
What is the melting & boiling points in an ionic compound?
High MP and BP
Why do covalent compounds have a low MP and BP?
Has a simple molecular structure with weak
intermolecular forces of attraction between
molecules.
Breaking this attraction requires little
energy.
Hence it has a low melting point.
Why do ionic compounds have a high MP and BP?
Has a giant ionic lattice structure with strong
electrostatic forces of attraction between
oppositely charged ions.
Breaking this attraction requires a lot of energy.
Hence it has a high melting point.
What is the electrical conductivity of covalent compounds?
does not conduct electricity in any
state
What is the electrical conductivity of ionic compounds?
conducts electricity in molten (liquid) and
aqueous (dissolved in water) states
Why is covalent compounds unable to conduct electricity in any state?
They have no free mobile ions, hence they are unable to conduct electricity in any state.
Why is ionic compounds able to conduct electricity in any state?
In the solid state, the ions are in fixed positions.
However in the aqueous/molten state, the ions are free to move about and can carry the current.
