Atomic Structure Flashcards
Protons
+1 charge; In nucleus
Neutrons
0 charge; In nucleus
Electrons
-1 Charge; Around the shell
Atoms are electrically neutral.
A proton has a +1 charge whereas an electron has a -1 charge.
Since there is equal number of number of protons and number of electrons, therefore an atom is electrically neutral.
Explain why atoms of an element can have the same
chemical property but can have different masses?
These atoms are isotopes. They
have the same number of protons and electrons, since
chemical property is affected by number of electrons, they
have the same chemical property.
Mass is affected by number of protons and neutrons. Since isotopes have different number of neutrons, the mass is different.
