chemical and physical tests ✓ Flashcards
how do you do a flame test ?
- dip nichrome wire into hydrochloric acid to clean it
- place the wire into the sample (solid/liquid)
- place the sample on the nichrome wire into a blue roaring flame
- describe the colour
what is the flame colour for lithium ions ?
bright red
what is the flame colour for sodium ions ?
yellow/orange
what is the flame colour for potassium ions ?
lilac
what is the flame colour for calcium ions ?
orange/red
what is the flame colour for copper ions ?
blue/green with white streaks
what is the test for hydrogen gas (H2) ?
light splint into test tube creates a squeaky pop
what is the test for oxygen gas (O2) ?
glowing splint into test tube will re-light
what is the test for carbon dioxide gas (CO2) ?
bubbled through limewater the limewater will create a cloudy white precipitate
what is the test for ammonia gas (NH3) ?
damp red litmus paper goes blue
what is the test for chlorine gas (Cl2) ?
damp red or blue litmus paper will be bleached white
how do you complete a halide test ?
- put solution in a test tube
- add nitric acid to get rid of the impurities (carbonate ions)
- add silver nitrate and the precipitate will form
what is the colour for chloride ions in the halide test ?
white
what is the colour for bromide ions in the halide test ?
cream
what is the colour for iodide ions in the halide test ?
yellow
what is the chemical test for water ?
anhydrous copper sulphate will go blue if liquid is water
what is a physical test for water ?
water will boil at exactly 100°C
what is a physical test for water ?
water will freeze at exactly 0°C
what is the test for alkenes ?
bromine water goes from orange to colourless
how do you do a metal cation test ?
- put solution in test tube
- add sodium hydroxide
- identify the coloured precipitate
what colour do iron 2+ (Fe2+) ions go ?
makes a green precipitate
what colour do iron 3+ (Fe3+) ions go ?
makes an orange/brown precipitate
what colour do copper 2+ ions (Cu2+) go ?
makes a blue precipitate
what is the test for ammonium (NH4+ ions) ?
- put solution in test tube
- adds sodium hydroxide
- warm it
- test for ammonia (damp red litmus paper goes blue)
what is the test for a sulphate (SO4 2- ions) ?
- put solution in test tube
- add barium chloride
- white precipitate of barium sulphate forms
what is the test for a carbonate ?
- add dilute hydrochloric acid to substance
- if carbonates are present carbon dioxide will be released
- do test for carbon dioxide (limewater)
