Chemical And Biological Control Of Agricultural Pests Flashcards
What is a pesticide?
Poisonous chemicals that kill pests
What is a pest?
An organism that competes with humans for food or space, or it could be a danger to health
An effective pesticide should be…
Specific, biodegradable, cost-effective and not accumulate
What is biological control?
The control of pests using organisms that are either predators or parasites of the pest organism
Name 3 advantages of biological control?
Very specific, once introduced the control organism reproduces itself and pests do not become resistant
Name 2 disadvantages of biological control
They do not act as quickly and a control organism may itself become a pest
List 3 disadvantages of chemical pesticides
Always have some effect on non-target species, must be reapplied at intervals which makes them very expensive and pests can develop genetic resistance
What are integrated pest-control systems?
They aim to integrate all forms of pest control rather than being reliant on one type
What do integrated pest-control systems try to do?
Decide on an acceptable level of the pest rather than trying to eradicate it altogether
What do integrated pest-control systems involve?
Managing the environment to provide suitable habitats, regularly monitoring crops for signs of pests so that early action can be taken, removing the pests mechanically
What is monoculture?
Growing a single species of crop
What are some disadvantages of monoculture?
Insects and fungal pests can spread easily
