Allelic Frequencies and Population Genetics Flashcards
What is the allelic frequency?
The number of times an allele occurs within the gene pool
What is a gene pool?
All the alleles of all the genes of all the individuals in a population at any one time
What provides a mathematical equation that can be used to calculate the frequencies of the alleles of a particular gene in a population?
The Hardy Weinberg principle
What does the Hardy Weinberg principle predict?
That the proportion of dominant and recessive alleles of any gene in a population remains the same from one generation to the next
What 5 assumptions does the Hardy Weinberg principle make?
No mutations arise, There is no gene flow, There is no selection, The population is large and Mating within the population is random
p + q = ?
1.0
What can reduce the genetic diversity of a population?
A genetic bottleneck, Founder effect and Selective breeding
