characteristics of muscle tissue Flashcards
what are the 3 types of muscle tissue
- skeletal muscle
- cardiac muscle
- smooth muscle
what is skeletal muscle also known as
striated or voluntary muscle tissue
functions of skeletal muscle tissue (2)
- movement of skeleton
- thermoregulation
locations of skeletal muscle tissue (2)
- attaches to bones or sometimes to skin
- forms external urethral and anal sphincters
function of cardiac muscle tissue
pumps blood through heart and blood vessels
location of cardiac muscle tissue
heart wall (myocardium)
functions of smooth muscle tissue (2)
- moves and propels materials through internal organs
- controls size of lumen
locations of smooth muscle tissue (2)
- walls of hollow internal organs - intestines, stomach, airways, urinary bladder, uterus and blood vessels
- iris of the eye
descriptions of skeletal muscle tissue (5)
- composed of long cylindrical cells (skeletal muscle fibers)
- multinucleated with them located on the periphery of the long fiber
- voluntary - contracts only when stimulated by somatic (voluntary) nervous system
- generally reduced ability to repair itself
- exhibits striations
descriptions of cardiac muscle tissue (4)
- cells are medium sized and often bifurcate (branch)
- visible striations
- connected by intercalated discs which are intercellular junctions between cells composed of desmosomes and gap junctions
- involuntary because they can’t be controlled by somatic (voluntary) nervous system, pacemaker cells in the heart wall initiate contraction
what do intercalated discs do (2)
- strengthen the connection between cells
- promote rapid conduction of electrical activity
what is smooth muscle tissue also known as
visceral or involuntary muscle tissue
description of smooth muscle tissue (4)
- lack striations
- fusiform
- one centrally located, oval nucleus
- can engage in cell division to provide growth and healing of the tissue
