Characteristics of Living Organisms Flashcards
Unicellular
Made up of a single cell carrying out all functions
Multicellular
Made up of many specialised cells carrying out specific functions
All living organisms

Cytoplasm
The jelly-like material in which all the cell’s organelles are found. It is also the site where most cellular reactions occur.
Cell membrane
It forms a boundary between the cytoplasm of the cell & outside. It also controls which substance can enter & leave the cell-partially permeable.
Nucleus
It has the DNA of the cell that contains genes which controls all the activities of the cell.
Mitochondria
The site of energy release by respiration.
Ribosome
The site of protein synthesis
Cell wall
It is made up of cellulose. It maintains the shape of the cell & prevents bursting of the cell when extra water enters.
Vacuole
Mature plant cells has large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap that stores water & nutrients.
Chloroplast
They contain chlorophyll that carry out photosynthesis in plants.
