Chapters 41-43, 45 Drugs Flashcards
Acyclovir
Antiviral used for the treatment of viral infections, chickenpox, shingles and herpes; completely inhibits and inactivates HSV-specified DNA polymerases preventing further viral DNA synthesis
Amantadine
Antiviral and antiparkinsonian medication
Amoxicillin
Antibiotic for bacterial infections
Chloroquine
Treatment of malaria; enters the red blood cell, inhibits parasite cell and digestive vacuole by simple diffusion
Ciprofloxacin
Antibiotic for bacterial infections; inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which inhibits cell division
Doxycycline
Antibiotic used for pneumonia, acne, chlamydia, Lyme disease, cholera and syphilis; used to prevent malaria; prevents binding of tRNA to mRNA at the ribosomal subunit
Doxorubicin
Chemotherapy medication used to treat cancer; inhibits the progression of topoisomerase II, an enzyme which relaxes supercoils in RNA for transcription
Erythromycin
Antibiotic for respiratory tract infections, skin infections, chlamydia, syphilis, etc.
Fluconazole
Antifungal drug used to treat Candida
Gentamicin
Antibiotic for bone infections, endocarditis, meningitis, pneumonia, UTI, sepsis, etc; binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome, negatively impacting protein synthesis
Leuprolide
Manufactured version of a hormone to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis; agonist of pituitary GnRH receptors
Metronidazole
Antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication to treat pelvic inflammatory disease, endocarditis, bacterial vaginosis
Neomycin
Aminoglycoside antibiotic found in many topical meds
Nystatin
Antifungal medication used for vaginal yeast infections, diaper rash, etc.; ionophore that binds to ergosterol
Quinine
Treatment of malaria; theorized to be toxic to the malarial pathogen
