Chapter10.1 Flashcards
The process that transforms sunlight into chemical energy that is stored in sugars and other organic molecules.
Photosynthesis Formula
6[CO2] + 6[H2O] + Light -> C6H12O6 + 6[O2]
What are the two major modes by which an organism acquires the organic compounds it needs for energy and carbon skeletons?
- Autotrophic nutrition
- Heterotrophic nutrition
Autotrophs (“self-feeders”)
They sustain themselves without eating anything derived from other living organisms.
*Produces organic molecules from CO2 and other inorganic raw materials.
I.E. Producers
Photoautotrophs
Organisms that use light as a source of energy to synthesize organic substances.
Heterotrophs
They are unable to make their own food. Instead, they live on compounds produced by other organisms.
I.E. Consumers and Decomposers
