Chapter Twelve: Neural Tissues Flashcards
Neural tissues contains two kinds of cells
- Neurons
2. Neuroglia
Cells that send and receive signals
Neurons
Cells that support and protect neurons
Neuroglia
Consists of the spinal cord and the brain
Central Nervous System
Carries sensory information from PNS sensory receptors to CNS
Afferent division
Carries motor commands from CNS to PNS muscles and glands
Efferent division
Detect changes or respond to stimuli, contain neurons and specialized cells and complex sensory organs
Receptors
Respond to efferent signals; responsive cells organs
effectors
controls voluntary and involuntary [reflexes] muscle skeletal contractions
Somatic nervous system [SNS]
Controls subconscous actions, contractions of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glandular secretions
Autonomic nervous system [ANS]
a stimulating effect under the autonomic nervous system
sympathetic division
a relaxing effect under the autonomic nervous system
parasympathetic division
