Writ of Habeas Corpus
A court order requiring jailers to explain to a judge why they are being held a prisoner in custody.
Separation of Powers
A rule in the constitution that the three branches of government (legislative, judicial and executive) of must have equal distribution of power so one doesn’t over control or over power the other.
Checks and Balances
A rule in the government that requires a limit on their power to be balanced among the different government legislation.
Republican
A form of government where the people select representatives to govern and make laws for them.
Federalists
People who approves of the Constitution when the states were contemplating it’s adoption.
Anti-Federalists
People who were against the Constitution before the states were contemplating its adoption.
Federalists Papers
A collection of 85 articles by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison titles “Publius” to promote and defend the constitution.
Bill of rights
The first 10 amendments in the constitution drafting responses to the anti-federalist such as freedom of speech, power and religion.
Equal Rights Amendments
A proposed amendment to the constitution stating that all citizens of the United States must be treated equally regardless of sex.
Marbury vs Madison
A court case in 1803 asserted it’s rights over the US Constitution establishing a courts over power acts of congress.
Judicial review
The courts decide the validity of acts of the legislative and executive branches of government.
