National Committee
One of the institutions keeps the party operating between conventions.
National Chairperson
A person that regulates day-to-day activities of the parties usually appointed by the presidential committee.
Coalition
A group of individuals that share a common interest upon which every political party depends.
Party Era
Historical period where voters often cling to the party with power, which usually wins elections.
Critical Election
An electoral “earthquake” where new issues and coalitions emerge.
Party realignment
The displacement of the majority party by the minority party, usually during a critical election.
New deal coalition
A coalition formed by the democrats. The basic elements include the urban working class, jews, ethnic groups, the poor, southerners like the diverse demographic groups.
National Convention
The meeting of the party delegates every fours years to choose a presidential ticket and choose the party’s platform.
Party dealignment
The gradual disengage from the people and the party. As seen in part by shrinking party identification.
Third parties
The electoral contenders, other than the two other major parties.
Winner-take-all system
An electoral system in which legislative seats are awarded only to candidates who come in first in their constituents.
