Civil Rights
Policies made to protect people against discriminatory by government officials or individuals.
Fourteenth Amendment
Guaranteed citizens of “equal protection of law.”
Equal Protection of Laws
A standard of equal of treatment that must be observed by the government.
Thirteenth Amendment
Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
Civil rights Act of 1964
Made racism illegal in racial accommodations. It forbade employment discrimination by race, gender etc. and strengthened voting right legislation.
Suffrage
The legal right to vote.
Fifteenth Amendment
Extended suffrage to African Americans.
Poll Taxes
Small taxes that were levied on the right to vote.
White Primary
Only whites were allowed to vote in primary parties (defines and limits the number of individuals who will run for the election)
Twenty-Fourth Amednement
Eliminated poll taxes for federal elections.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Helped end formal and informal barriers to voting.
Nineteenth Amendment
The Constitutional Amendment adopted in 1920 that guaranteed the women the right to vote.
Equal Rights Amendment
A proposed Amendment to the US Constitution outlawing discrimination based on sex.
Comparable Worth
The idea that women should be paid equal salaries to men for equivalent job responsibilities and skills
Americans w/ Disabilities Act of 1990
The Act made it unlawful to discriminate against employees with disabilities and prohibits any discriminations against anyone who experiences mental or physical abilities.
