Common cold, often caused by rhinoviruses
URI
Viral or bacterial
Inflammation of the sinus
Sinusitis
Inflammation of the pharynx
Pharyngitis
Inflammation of the larynx
Laryngitis
When the thin wall (nasal septum) between your nostrils is displaced to one side
Deviated septum
Benign growths
Nasal polyps
Loss of smell
Anosmia
Nose bleed
Epistaxis
Benign or malignant
Dysphonia is only symptom
Treatment:
Radiation, sometimes larynectomy
Tumors of the larynx
Coughing up or spitting up of blood from the respiratory tract
Hemoptysis
Collapsed lung
Incomplete expansion
Leads to hypoxia and dyspnea
Atelectasis
Clot occludes a pulmonary artery
Interrupts blood flow
Pulmonary embolism
Inflammation of the lungs, unilateral or bilateral, portion or all of a lung
Pneumonia
Pulse oximeter

Area of contained infectious material
More common in lower portions of lung
Purulent sputum, foul-smelling breath
Pulmonary abscess
Bacterial infection, mild or severe forms
Symptoms:
Bacteria thrive in warm aquatic environments and are inhaled (pools)
Legionnaires disease
RSV
Most common in infants children and elderly
Symptoms: cold-like, upper respiratory trac
Etiology: viral infection, Dec. to March
Respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia
Fungal disease
Inhalation of dust containing histoplasmosis capsulatum
Seen in HIV patients, Midwestern US (soil contaminated by bird droppings)
No treatment
Histoplasmosis
Acute bronchitis Chronic bronchitis Bronchiectasis Asthma Pulmonary emphysema Pneumoconiosis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Acute or chronic
Inflammation of mucous membrane lining the bronchi
Bronchitis
Symptoms: Deep productive cough, thick sputum Etiology: Part of general URI No specific treatment for viral Antibiotics for bacterial
Bronchitis
Dilation of bronchi (irreversible)
Bronchiectasis
Symptoms:
Chronic cough, Hemoptysis
Etiology:
Damage from smoking, pneumonia, TB, childhood diseases
Treatment:
Antibiotics, bronchodilators, postural drainage
Bronchiectasis
Enlargement of alveoli with damage to alveolar walls and capillary walls
Pulmonary emphysema
