Paralanguage
How we express meaning through sounds beyond words.
Voice qualities
Background characteristics of a person’s voice.
Vocalizations
Intentional sounds humans use to express meaning.
Ethnolinguistics
Study of the relationship between language and culture.
Sapir-Whorf hypothesis
Language shapes people’s perception of the world, because language structures our thoughts.
Linguistic determinism (strong)
Language determines thought and can limit the way we think.
Weak hypothesis
Language influences thoughts and worldview.
Dialects
Forms of a language that are similar enough to be mutually intelligible.
