What is ethics?
Set of moral principles ; principles of conduct governing an individual/group
How can new technology have an effect on human behavior?
Because it creates new situations/environments
What is a code of ethics?
Outlines set of acceptable behaviours for a professional/social group
What is the advantage of a code of ethics?
Clarifies acceptable standards of behavior
What are the 2 disadvantages of a code of ethics?
1)It doesn’t have any legal authority
2)There is always a chance that important issues will arise that are not specificially addressed in code

What is intellectual property?
Property that derives from work of the mind/intellect ; protects the tangible results of an idea
What is the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)?
Special operating agency of innovation, science, economy development canada
What is copyright?
Protection given to songs, computer programs, books, ect (if it has an author, can be copyrighted)
What are the 5 controls that copyright enforces?
1)Who can make copies of the work
2)Who can make derivative works from original
3)Who can make perform work publicly
4) Who can display the work publicly
5) Who can distribute the work
What is fair use?
Fair use of a copyrighted work for purposes usch as critism, comments, news, teaching, research is not an infringement of copyright
What is fair dealing?
Permits use of copyrighted work without permission as long as use falls within listed purposes in activity
What is the Copyright Act?
Help copyright owners deal with online copyright infringement
What is creative commons (CC)?
nonprofit org that provides legal tools for artists/authors with symbol CC
What is a patent?
Creates protection for someone who invents a new p/process. Gov gives right to stop other form making/selling invention
How much max time is a patent?
20 years

Must provide full description of invention
To whom must you submit patent application?
To Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)

Word, phrases, logo, shape or sound that identifies source of g/s

Ability to control info about oneself
What is the Privacy Act?
Sets out privacy rights in your interactions with federal gov
What is Personal Info (PI)?
Info about person that can be used to uniquely establish identity (Social insurance nbr)
