Chapter 9 - Homeostasis and Temp Regulation Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium ?
A state reached when the rates of the forward and reversed changes are equal
What is meant by set point?
Level with the point is maintained
What does steady state control systems do?
Maintain homeostasis
What is thermoregulation?
Regulation of body temp the balance of heat gain and heat loss in order to maintain a constant internal body temp
What is metabolic rate?
The rate at which energy is released by breaking down food
What are peripheral thermoreceptors?
Temperature receptors
What are central thermoreceptors?
Located in the hypothalamus
What do blood vessels do?
Carry heat to the skin from the core
What is controlled by autonomic nerves?
The diameter of blood vessels to the skin
How does the body prevent body temp from falling?
Skin receptor sends messages to hypothalamus. Hypothalamus then sends impulses aimed at reducing/increasing heat
What is vasoconstriction
Decrease in diameter of the blood
How does the body prevent hear from rising?
Sweating
Increase blood flow
What is negative feedback?
Response has the negative feedback of reducing or eliminating the stimulus that caused it
What is Metabolic water?
Water formed as a product of cellular respiration
