Chapter 6 - CNS Flashcards
3 things the Cerebrospinal Fluid does
Circulates Cavities
Shock absorber
Protection, support and transport
What is the Cerebrum
Biggest part of the brain
What is the outer surface of the brain made of?
Grey matter = cerebral cortex
What is below the cerebral cortex?
White matter
What is inside the cerebral cortex?
Grey Matter - Basal Ganglia
What are the ridges in the cerebrum known as?
Convolutions
What are Sucli?
Shallow down folds in the cerebrum
What is the name for deep down folds?
Fussures
What almost seperate a the cerebrum into two?
Longitudinal Fissure
What joins the 2 hemispheres together?
White matter - large bundle of transverse fibres
3 things that protect the CNS
Bone
Membrane Fluid - meninges
Cerebrospinal Fluid
What are the 4 lobes of each hemisphere of the cerebrum called?
Frontal Lobe Parietal Lobe Occipital Lobe Temporal Lobe And also the insula
What is the White matter inside the cerebral cortex?
Myelinated nerve fibres
What are tracts?
Nerve fibres
What are the 3 types of tracts?
- Connects areas of the Cortex within same hemisphere
- Carries impulses between left and right hemisphere
- Connect the cortex to other parts of the Brian and spinal cords
What is the cerebrum responsible for?
Mental actions
Perception of senses
Voluntary muscle contractions
What are the three types of the functional area of the cortex?
Sensory: interpret impulses from receptors
Motor: control muscular movements
Association: intellectual and emotional process
What is the cerebellum?
Lies under the rear part of the cerebrum
2nd largest part of the brain
What are the outer folded parts of the cerebellum made from?
Grey matter
What does the cerebellum control?
Posture
Balance
Coordination
Voluntary muscle movement
What is the hypothalamus responsible for?
Homeostasis
The hypothalamus regulates
Autonomic Nervous system Body temp Food and water intake Emotional responses Secretion of hormones
What is the medulla oblongata
The continuation on the spinal cord
What does the medulla oblongata contain?
Cardiac centre: regulates rate and force heartbeat
Respiratory centre: rate of breathing
Vasomotor Centre: diameter of blood vessels
