Chapter 11 - Distribution To Homeostasis Flashcards
What is type 1 diabetes?
Insulin dependent diabetes, fault in persons immune system
What is type 2 diabetes?
Production of insulin however cells do not respond
What do thyroid hormones do?
Secrete thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Why is thyroid hormones important for homeostasis?
Release in form of heat
What does hyperthyroidism do?
Produce too much hormones
What is the effect of caffeine for homeostasis?
Stimulates metabolism
Binds to receptors on surface
Increase blood flow through kidneys and lungs
What is the effect of alcohol for homeostasis?
Lowers blood sugar
Inhabits production of antdiuretic hormone (reduces water absorption)
What is the effect of amphetamine and methamphetamine for homeostasis?
Enter brain releases noradrenaline, dopamine and seotonin
What is the effect of MDMA/ ecstasy for homeostasis?
Increase heart rate
Blood pressure
Breathing rate
What is the effect of cocaine for homeostasis?
Increased heart rate
Blood pressure
Body temp
What is the effect of Heroin for homeostasis?
Breathing rate slows
Blood pressure
What is hypertension
High blood pressure occurs when homeostatic response are unable to keep blood pressure at normal level
What is diabetes?
High blood glucose levels = hyperglycaemia
