Chapter 8 - Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two main parts of the nervous system
Central nervous system
Peripheral nervous system
What does the central nervous system consist of?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral system made up of?
Nerves that connect the CNS with receptors, muscles and glands
What are ganglion?
A small group of nerve cell bodies outside the Brian and spinal cord
What are cranial nerves?
One of 12 pairs of nerves that arise from the brain
What are sensory fibres?
Fibres that carry impulses into the central nervous system
What are motor fibres?
A fibre that carries impulses away from the central nervous system
What is a spinal nerve?
One of the 31 pairs of nerves that arise from the spinal cord: joined to spinal cord by dorsal and ventral roots
What is a ventral root?
One of the two roots that link a spinal nerve to the spinal cord: contains axons of motor neurons
What is a dorsal root?
One of the two roots that link a spinal nerve to the spinal cord: contains axons is sensory neurons
What is a dorsal root ganglion?
A group of nerve cell body located in the dorsal root of a spinal nerve
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Regulates body functions, such as heart beat, blood pressure and digestion
Brings about changes to enable homeostasis
What are afferent (sensory) division?
Fibres that carry impulses into the CNS. They are carried by sensory nerve from receptors
What is a sensory neuron?
A nerve cell that carries messages from receptors to the brain or spinal cord
Apart of the afferent division
What is visceral sensory neurons?
Apart of the afferent division
A neuron that takes impulses from the internal organs to the CNS
