Chapter 9 Flashcards
What is Mass Wasting?
when rocks and debris move down hill in large chunks.
What is a land slide
The general term for slow to rapid descending mass of rock or debris.
What is relief in the context of Mass Wasting?
The vertical distance between valley floor and mountain summit.
What is shear force in the context of mass wasting
The force required to break a chunk of soil loose.
What are the three types of Mass Wasting
- Flow
- Fall
- Slide
- Translational Slide
- Rotational Slide
What are the three classifications of Mass Wasting.
- Rate of Movement
- Type of Material
- nature of the movement.
What types of material are involved in mass waisting?
- Soil
- Debris
- earth
- Mud
What is creep
The very slow, continus downslope movement of soil or debris.
What is a flow?
A descending mass of material that moves downslope as a viscous fluid.
What is earth Flow
Slow to rapid mass wasting in which fine grained soil moves downslope as a very viscous fluid.
Solifluction
Flow of water-saturated soil over impermeable material.
Permafrost
soil that is frozen
What is a mudflow?
A flowing mixture of soil and water usually moving down a channel it usually has the consistency of a milk shake.
What are the two forces gravity puts on a mass wasting
- Normal Force
2. Shear Force
What is a trigger
A sudden event that triggers a landslide like an earthquake.
