Identify Good Emperors (as a whole)
group of 5 Roman emperors whose plan was to always have an heir ready for throne; signif: kept peace and order, stopped struggles for throne, and none of them went insane or were power hungry.
Pope Callistus
Pope of Rome; was accused by Hippolytus of not being the Pope b/c he was friends w/ a heretic and he had mad moral standards. signif: martyred, (died for the faith).
Hippolytus
anti- Pope in Rome against Pope Callistus; he repented in salve labor mines; died as a martyr. signif: first and only anti- Pope saint (and died for faith).
Pontian
Pope of Rome after Callistus; He and Hippolytus were arrested by Romans and put in slave labor mines, where Hippolytus repents to him; signif: first Pope to resign; died as a martyr and became a saint (Hippolytus too)
Diocletian
Augustus of East who wanted what was best for Rome; he came up w/ a system that spreads out power so there’s always an heir to throne; signif: wanted to keep peace and order in Rome.
Galerius
Caesar of East in Rome; his mother, Romula, wanted to persecute Christians; so Galerius convinces Diocletion to permanently resign as Augusta. Therefore Galerius becomes Augusta in East; Also keeps Constantine captive at his house; signif: ends the great persecution b/c he thinks the Christian God will save him (since he’s dying) but he died.
Romula
mother of Galerius in Rome; priestess of a mystery religion; hater of Christians; signif: so she asked galerius to persecute Christians.
Great Persecution
the 3 ½ yrs. w/out a Pope; worst in Egypt b/c Galerius was Augusta in East; different stages of Great Persecution: no Christians were allowed in government or army; burned Christian books and Churches and arrested priests; all Christians must sacrifice to the gods or die. signif: proved that the church can survive even in difficult circumstances
Constantine
Caesar of West from Rome. (he goes to get approval- of being Caesar- from Augustus Diocletion); arrives at Galerius’ home, and is captured there, until he eventually escapes after tricking Galerius to letting him leave; Constantine’s Ride home through many countries; army chooses him as Caesar of West (and he later becomes Augustus) Constantine wants to control whole West- he saw a vision of a cross and chi rho sign) started building Churches, protecting the Church, he declared Rome neutral to Christianity, helped try and stop Arian heresy. signif: founder of Christendom (lots of other signifs you could probably figure out:)
Edict of Milan
in 313, when Licinius and Constantine get together in Milan, Rome to discuss religious matters; signif: they decide the Roman empire will be neutral towards religions (and Christianity).
