Attila and the Huns

A

barbarian whom many people feared; his goal: to take over Rome and to make his new empire (called Attilian); Huns are in city of Rome and so Pope Leo the Great asks for a meeting with Attila. We don’t know what happened during that meeting, but Attila withdrew and left. After, Attila died, and his empire fell apart. signif: shows authority of Pope.

Pope Leo

A

Pope in charge of Rome who asked for a meeting w/ Attila the Hun at the Tiber River; after their conversation Attila did not attack Rome. Vandals are outside of Rome and Leo convinces Vandals not to kill people, burn, and sack major basilicas (they listen); also said the tome of Leo (from chapt 10) signif: shows authority of Pope.

St. Patrick

A

from Britain; at age 16, he was captured by Celts (an uncivilized Irish Barbarian group); he didn’t take his faith seriously at the time. Patrick was made a sheep herder, and he eventually started praying a lot and became quite devout. Here, he wrote a book called Confession, about his life; 6 yrs. later he heard a voice: “You’re going to go home, your ship is ready.” he escapes and rides home on a ship carrying Irish wolf-hounds. At home (after having a vision) he realizes God’s calling him to go back to IRL and become a missionary; Druids (nature-worshippers) aren’t happy with Patrick; On Holy Saturday, Druids light a big fire, and so does Patrick (the paschal candle) Druids take Patrick to King Laoghaire and they have a magic-miracle-contest and Patrick wins (King Laoghaire allows Patrick to preach freely throughout IRL- which converts rapidly); Patrick also makes many monasteries. signif: helps civilize IRL, while rest of world comes out of Dark Ages, IRL is in Golden Ages.

St. Bridget

A

from IRL; Bridget was a Christian who wanted women to run monasteries too; decides to do green martyrdom (caring for poor and sick); signif: she founded first monastery for women in IRL (made it possible to enter religious life for women)

St. Colmcille

A

Irish monk; Angel gave him gifts of wisdom and purity; founded many monasteries; one day (when he was at another monastery) he saw this book he wanted, but the monk owner didn’t allow him to copy it; but Colmcille copied it secretly, until the monk-owner caught him and took him to the high king, Diarmuid, who made decision that Colmcille had to give his copy back to owner of the book-monk; Colmcille’s angry and tells his dad, who fights against high king called: War of the Book. Colmcille’s dad wins and offers Colmcille a chance (to give up life as a monk) and be king of Tirconnail; Wisdom returns to him and he refuses, does tons of penance. Bishops penance for him: permanent exile and (his own penance) to convert as many people that died in battle (3000); went to Iona and Scotland, (where he was evangelizing to Picts) and he started making monasteries and stuff. signif: converted over 3000 people

St. Brendan

A

monk from IRL who wrote a book called: Navigatio, which said he and his monks built a boat out of leather and went sailing West from IRL; he was a missionary (got to Iceland, Greenland, & Canada); talks about strange things he saw: Island of birds, island of sheep, island of fire, pillars of crystal; Tim Severin proved his voyage was possible by duplicating it: built a leather boat, found island of birds (w/ many birds), island of sheep (w/ many sheep), island of fire (was Iceland, which had geysers and volcanoes); theoretically possible Brendan could’ve landed on a whale Tim believes place they landed on: New founded land; signif: Navigatio proven possible —?

Columbanus

A

missionary in IRL who went East to Europe (France- where he founded many monasteries); Queen Brunehilde didn’t allow him to have missionaries where she was in control of; so Columbanus tried to leave IRL, but wind kept pushing him back; signif: he founded monasteries in: France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

Benedict

A

hermit who wanted to shape up Vicovaro monastery to shape it up. Some of the monks didn’t want to shape it up so they put poison in his wine cup but he did the sign of cross and poison spilled out; built Monte Cassino monastery and wrote Benedictine Rul (motto: Ora et Labora- pray and work); made a prophesy that Monte Cassino would be destroyed x3 but monks would always escape (Lombards, Muslims and American + British) signif: Benedict is the Father of Western Monoasticism and JPII gave him title: Father of Europe.

King Arthur

A

king of part of Britain. He was in the book called: Annals of Wales (which describes a great victory he won against Barbarians); he was fighting against Saxons (sea-wolves) called Battle of Mount Badon, where Arthur bore the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ on His shoulders (he was Catholic) signif: he ended up winning the battle.

A

Catholic wife of King Clovis; queen of France. (in charge of Tribe of Franks) signif: France = eldest daughter of the Church

Clovis

A

king of France and leader of Franks tribe; married to a Catholic, Clovis; he allowed her to practice her faith. One day, in battle, Clovis (Franks) was losing against Barbarians (Allemani); Clovis tried praying to pagan gods (nothing happened), so he decided to pray to Clotilde’s God. He said: “If you are the true God, help me (let me win the battle) and I’ll be baptized.” He won the battle and was baptized, along with 3000 of his men. (pretty soon the entire tribe converted) signif: first all Christian tribe.

Hermenegild

A

older prince of Visigoths who was an Arian. He married a Christian, Ingunthis who refused to be Arian, so his father (king Leovigild) sends Hermenegild and Ingunthis on a honeymoon to Seville, where Heremenegild converts to faith under Leanders instruction and Ingunthis’ prayers. King Leovigild is very angry at Hermengild demands him to un-convert, but he refuses. So there’s a rebellion Arians vs Catholics; Leovigild won battle and imprisons his son and he dies in prison signif: dies a martyr and a saint and conversion of Visigoths, and after next yr Leovigild converted on death bed and Riccared becomes king of Spain and declares Spain Catholic (secretly, under instruction of Leander, he became a catholic).

Gregory the Great

A

Pope; lived in a wealthy family, growing up in Rome during the Dark Ages; at first he wanted to do something w/ government. So he tried keeping order in Rome w/ Prefect of Rome; later he became a Benedictine monk and was appointed as one of the 7 deacons of Rome; Gregory eventually became Pope and stops plague by asking people to pray (and he organizes 7 Penitential Processions); eventually plague ceased; Gregory became head of Rome and was a farmer, governor, general, and Pope; after he helps govern Rome he had Gregorian Chants songs at all masses; he made a law for Latin Rite Church (Rule: Celibacy for priests); Lombards started attacking but Gregory forms an army against them; he converts Prince of Lombards; showed his humility by signing: Servant of the Servants of God; signif: helped govern Rome.

Augustine of Canterbury

A

Benedictine monk chosen by Pope Gregory to convert Angles (as a missionary). Augustine + 40 monks go to Angles. King Ethelbert (king of Angles) allowed them to preach in his kingdom b/c his wife, Bertha, was Christian. signif: Augustine and his 40 monks baptized 10,000 people + King Ethelbert)
