Practical Intelligence

Age at which a person is performing intellectually

Measure of intelligence that is adjusted for age
Aptitude Tests
Designed to measure ones ability to perform a specific task
Boderline Intelligence
IQ below 70
Down Syndrome
Chromosomal Disorder leaning to boderline intelligence caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome
Phonemes
Smallest unit of sound that makes a meaningful difference in a language
Morphemes
String of one or more phonemes that make up the smallest units on meaning in a language
Syntax
Set of rules of a language by which we construct sentences
Contextual Information
Information surrounding language; facial expressions, postures, gestures and tone of voice
Generativity
Speakers of a language can compose sentences to represent new ideas that they have never before been exposed to
Deep Structure
How an idea is represented in the fundamental universal grammar that is common to all languages
Surface Structure
How an idea is expresses in any one language
Broncas Area
Area in front of the left hemisphere. Responsible for language production
Wernickes Area
Area of the brain for language comprehension
Aphasia
Language function are severely impaired
Broncas Aphasia
Can understand speech but have difficulty producing speech
Wernickes Aphasia
Trouble understanding language but can produce speech
