Chapter 9 Flashcards
Consider the 6 Following Best practices for avoiding and preventing contamination and exposure
Isolate the area and implement scene control
Minimize contact with hazardous substances
-Avoid walking through and touching the product when ever possible
- always try to reduce contact with the product
Wear disposable outer garments and respiratory protection where appropriate
If possible do not kneel or sit on the ground in CPC, because this may cause chafing or abrasion of the suit
Place barriers between the suit and rough surfaces to reduce the potential of suit damage
Encase the source of contaminants with plastic sheeting
Decontamination operation are easy to summarize
Get it off
Keep it off
Contain it
Three decontamination types
Emergency Decon
Mass Decon
Technical Decon
Emergency decontamination refers to decon that is
Urgent and field expedient, applied to any person who has hqad direct exposure to contaminants
Three most important reason for emergency decontamination are
Remove the agent from the victims skin and clothing thereby reducing further potential agent exposure and further effects among victims
Protect emergency responders medical personnnel and others from secondary contamination
Prevent victims from spreading contamination over additional areas
Gross removal may be accomplished by one or all of the following 4 Methods
Water shower
Fresh air/off gassing
Clothing removal
Dry Brushing/Wipe down
For many liquid products, the most expedient approach is
High Volume, low pressure water shower
Off Gassing occurs
in fresh air and may need fans
3 Factors considered when implementing emergency decontamination include
The area should be away from the hot zone
Select a location upwind, uphill, upstream from the source of contamination
There should be access to sufficient water if implementing wet decon
