Chapter 8.6: Allylic Halogenation Flashcards
What is a carbon adjacent to a carbon-carbon double bond?
allylic carbon
Describe the mechanism of allylic halogenation
o Step 1: Chain Initiation
Chain initiation involves formation of radicals from NBS by light-induced hemolytic cleavage of the N—Br bond in NBS
o Step 2: Chain Propagation
Chain propagation involves the formation of products. Reaction of a radical and a nonradical gives a new radical.
o Step 3: Chain Termination—The Destruction of Radicals
Propagation if the chain reaction continues until termination steps produce nonradical products and this stop further reaction.
What is any reaction in which an atom or group of atoms is substituted for another atom or group of atoms at an allylic carbon?
allylic substitution
Define allylic substitution
