Chapter 8.4-5 Vocab Flashcards
RNA
Nucleic acid that allows for the transmission of genetic information and protein synthesis
Central dogma
Theory that states that, in cells, information only flows from DNA to RNA to proteins
Transcription
The process of copying a sequence of DNA to produce a complementary strand of RNA
RNA polymerases
Enzyme that bonds nucleotides together in a chain to make a new RNA molecule
Messenger RNA
An intermediate message that is translated to form a protein
Ribosomal RNA
Located in the ribosome and guides the translation of mRNA into a protein; also used as a molecular clock
Transfer RNA
Brings amino acids to ribosomes during protein synthesis
Translation
The process that converts a mRNA message into a polypeptide
Codon
Sequence of three nucleotides that codes for one amino acid
Stop codon
Codon that signals to ribosomes to stop translation
Start codon
Codon that signals to ribosomes to begin translation (codes for the first amino acid in a protein)
Anticodon
a set of three nucleotides that is complementary to an mRNA codon
