Chapter 8-Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is ATP?
Adenosine triphosphate; it is cell’s basic energy source
How is the energy stored in ATP released?
by breaking the chemical bond between the second and third phosphates
Who is Jan van Helmont?
concluded that trees gain most of their mass from water
Who is Joseph Priestley?
using a bell jar, a candle, and a plant, Priestley finds that the plant releases oxygen
Who is Jan Ingenhousz?
Finds that aquatic plants make oxygen bubbles in the light but not in the dark; concluded that plants need sunlight to produce oxygen
Who is Melvin Calvin?
traced the path that carbon follows to form glucose; Calvin Cycle or light independent reaction
What are pigments?
light absorbing molecules
What are the pigments found in plants?
chlorophyll and carotenoid
What color does chlorophyll reflect?
green
What are thylakoids?
saclike photosynthetic membranes where the chlorophyll and other pigments are collected into clusters known as photosystems
What is a stack of thylakoids called?
granum (plural: grana)
What happens in the thylakoids?
Light- dependent reactions
What is the stroma?
The space outside of the thylakoid membranes; where the light-independent reaction occurs
The light independent reactions use energy from sunlight to form what?
ATP, NADPH and oxygen
What does the Calvin Cycle use to produce high energy sugars?
ATP, NADPH and Carbon dioxide
