Chapter 8: Memory Flashcards
Atkinson-Shiffrin Model
- Sensory memory
- Short-term/working memory
- Long-term memory
- Serial position curve
Sensory memory
Filled with sensory information.
All memories are temporary.
Selective attention to details.
Short-term/working Memory
Holds a limited amount of information temporarily to process it.
Mixes new sensory information with long-term memory.
Auditory Rehearsal
Repeating something to memorize it
Executive Function
Choosing what you pay attention to
Visospatial Sketchpad
Rearranging something in your head
Maintenance Rehearsal
Simple repetition
Elaborative Rehearsal
Focusing on meaning to memorize something
Long-Term memory
Durable stored memories.
Unlimited storage capacity.
Memories can last for a lifetime.
Serial Position Curve
Participants are read a list of unrelated words and are asked to remember as many words as possible. They will remember the words at the beginning and end of the list the best.
Explicit Memories
Facts and experiences that we can consciously know and remember that are acquired through studying or rehearsing.
Implicit Memories
Memories of which we are not fully aware of that are acquired through automatic processing
Automatic Processing
When information goes straight from sensory experience to long-term memory with no awareness that the memory is being formed.
Retrograde Amnesia
The inability to retrieve memory of the past
Anterograde Amnesia
The inability to form new long-term memories
