Biopsychosocial Model
Believes that physical illnesses are not only caused by biological factors, but also psyhosocial factors
Health Psychology
Concerned with how psychosocial factors relate to health, and with the causation, prevention, and treatment of illness.
Primary Appraisal
“What do I have to do?”
Secondary Appraisal
“How can I deal with this situation?”
Acute Stressors
Stressors that have a short duration and a clear end point
Chronic Stressors
Stressors that have a relatively long duration and no clear end point

Occurs in any situation in which the pursuit of some goal is blocked
Conflict
Occurs when two or more incompatible motivations compete.
Change
Any noticable alterations in ones living circumstances that require adjustment
Measured using the social readjustment rating scale (SRRS)
SRRS
Assigns numerical value to 43 major life events, 100 being the most stressful
Pressure
Expectations or demands that one behaves in a certain way
General Adaptation Syndrome
A model of the bodys stress response, consisting of three phases (alarm, resistance, exhaustion)
Alarm
Activation of sympathetic nerve system
Resistance
Physiological changes stabilize as coping efforts get underway
