Chapter 8 - Light and Optics Flashcards
Electromagnetic spectrum
Full range of frequencies and wavelengths of electromagnetic waves
Rectilinear propagation
When light travels through homogeneous medium, it travels in a straight line
Reflection
Rebounding of incident light waves at the boundary of a medium
Real image
Light converges at position of the image
Visual image
Light only appears to be coming from the position of the image
Plane mirrors
Flat, reflective surface; neither convergence nor divergence of reflected light rays
Center of curvature
Point on optical axis located at a distance equal to the radius of curvature from the vertex of a mirror
Concave
Center/radius of curvature located in front of mirror
Convex
center/radius of curvature behind the mirror
Magnification
Ratio of image distance to object distance
Refraction
Bending of light as it passes from one medium to another and changes speed
Total internal reflection
All the light incident on a boundary is reflected back into the original material
Hyperopia
Convergence to correct farsightedness
Myopia
Divergence to correct nearsightedness
Spherical aberration
Blurring of the periphery of an image as a result of inadequate reflection of parallel beams at the edge of a mirror or inadequate refraction of parallel beams at the edge of a lens
