Chapter 12 - Data Based and Statistical Flashcards
Measures of central tendency
Provide a single value representation for the middle of a group of data
Mean
Measure of central tendency that equally weighs all values; average
Median
Value that lies in the middle of the data set
Mode
Data point that appears most often
Normal distribution
Symmetrical
- Mean, median, and mode are all the same
Standard distribution
Normal distribution with a mean of 0 and standard deviation of one
Skewed distributions
Have differences in their mean, median, and mode
Bimodal distributions
Have multiple peaks
Range
Difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set
Interquartile range
Difference between the value of the 3rd quartile and 1st quartile
Standard deviation
Measurement of variability about the mean
Outliers
May be a result of true population variability, measurement error, or non-normal distribution
Independent events
Probability of event does not change based on the outcomes of other events
Dependent events
Probability of event changes depending on the outcomes of other events
Mutually exclusive outcomes
Cannot occur simultaneously
