What is an institution?
A persistent pattern of social interaction aimed at meeting a need of society not easily met by individuals (ex: education-national institution) - overt and obvious function
What is the hidden curriculum?
Lessons taught about gender and appropriate social behaviour in schools.
What are norms?
Beliefs and practices that are well known, widely followed, and culturally approved (example: Back to school shopping).
What are policies?
Explicit and codified expectations often with stated consequences for deviance (ex: attendance rules)
What is an example of how institutions impose themselves on our lives?
Summer break- you have to do it no matter if it’s actually a break or not.
What is social structure?
The stability of institutions and relationships between them which provides a framework to help us make rational decisions- help us to know what we wish to accomplish and how.
What is a gendered institution?
An institution wherein gender is an organizing principle- men and women are channelled into different/different valued social spaces or activities.
What is gender salience?
Relevance of gender across contexts, activities, and spaces. Rises and falls across different institutional landscapes- affirm and support both gender differences and inequality.
What is an example of gender salience?
Public bathrooms-public sanitation is a necessary institution, but sex segregation is a social one. T
Why are bathrooms segregated?
It was thought women needed a “restroom” for their weak, fragile selves. Also hides womens bodily function and makes it seem like they don’t actually use them-bathrooms with couches and etc. Protect your genitals from the opposite but NOT THE SAME sex.
How many states passed laws protecting trans people rights to use their bathroom of choice?
19 (CAN passed this law in 2017).
What did Ivan Coyote discuss in his TED talk on public bathrooms?
Power insulates people from the everyday bathroom challenges- place where trans people are most likely to get harrassed. There is no legal way to enforce bathroom laws.
What are sports seen as for men?
A way for boys to train to become men- the default for them.
What was the first recreational activity taken up by women?
Bicycling.
