What is a gender strategy?
Finding ways that doing gender works for us- can change depending on our situation (ex: girly girl, tomboy, jock, nerd, supermom, breadwinner, wife, mother)
Which types of people have more gender strategies available to them?
People with more money and class. (ex: if you want to be a wonderful wife, you must be married to a breadwinner with money).
Why do single mothers have children?
Because they want to gain meaning and give back to the world
Which class of people divorces more and what does this result in?
Lower class- become very cautious about marriage due to a want to make a lifetime commitment. Marriage becomes unimportant, may have children earlier or become single parents.
What is the core task of early adulthood for poor people?
To have children.
What is crucial for marriage?
Financial stability.
Does waiting longer for a child matter economically or for child outcomes?
No- child outcomes are dependent on stable families.
What does race designate?
The value of individual bodies.
What are African American men viewed as?
More aggressive, criminal, and sexually violent which reflects hypermasculinity. This results in teachers of all races viewing misbehaviour from black boys more harshly than whites, thus contributing to the stereotype.
How can black boys be seen as good?
By being docile (Gentle Black Man strategy)
What are African American women seen as?
Less feminine than white women, hypersexual, physically tough.
What is the girly girl strat seen as with African American women?
Embracing white beauty standards and speech.
How do African American women show more femininity?
Through hair, clothing and voice.
What is “Black is beautiful” seen as?
A rejection of whiteness, and therefor unattractive, threatening, or unprofessional.
What are Asian American men seen as and why?
Hard-working, smart, but feminine. This is due to their historical role in the countries growth wherein Asians provided domestic services.
What are Asian American women seen as and why?
They are racially feminized and sexually fetishized. Chinese and Japanese women were brought to the USA as sex slaves, making them seem passive and available.
What is the unmarked category?
The social identity that is assumed for a role or context without justification-whoever fits the “norm”.
What are White North American’s viewed as?
Racially unmarked-the default. Others see white as the norm and racial others as deviant (which brings stereotypes). Whiteness also seen as boring.
What are sexual minorities?
Gays, lesians, trans, bisexuals.
What is homophobia?
The bias against and fear of sexual minorities.
What is compulsory heterosexuality?
Feeling on the part of some sexual minorities that they must hide their orientation.
What is heteronormative?
Assumption that everyone is heteresexual unless there are signs that suggest otherwise.
What is homonormativity?
The practice of obeying most gender rules except that we must desire and partner someone of the opposite sex.
What happens to gender roles when people immigrate?
Families become reconfigured and gender roles and marital arrangements may have to change.
