Chapter 8: Foundational Movements Flashcards
Describe the difference between open and closed kinetic chain exercises.
Open kinetic chain exercises involve successively arranged joints and free movement of the terminal segment (e.g., barbell chest press, triceps kick back, leg curl).
• Closed kinetic chain exercises involve successively arranged joints and no movement of the terminal segment (e.g., push-up, leg press, squat).
Define functional training and explain its importance to clients.
Functional training focuses on performing exercises that mimic everyday activities. Functional training should be prescribed to improve a client’s performance of daily activities in a way that is nonrestricted, safe, and pain-free. Foundational movement sequences are often understood to be functional, but they can be progressed to apply to performance training as well.
Which type of reflex is primarily used when the body attempts to maintain its position on an unsteady surface?
equilibrium reflex
Which is not an example of an appropriate exercise progression?
using a four-point quadruped instead of standing with feet parallel
Which of the following would be more appropriate for the beginner client?
static stability exercises
The active movement sequences include all of the following except
climbing
When it comes to understanding posture, stability, and movement, people who are said to be natural-born athletes are likely to have a high level of
biomotor abilities
