Chapter 1: Understanding you and your client Flashcards
- What does the acronym SMART represent?
SMART is a method of setting short-term and long-term goals with clients. The acronym stands for specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, and time sensitive.
Explain the importance of providing the client with the why behind an exercise selected for her or his program. Give an example of the why for a squat.
The Personal Training Specialist will sometimes notice a difference between what the client wants and what she or he truly needs. This difference often occurs because the client doesn’t understand the purpose of a particular exercise or has a conflict based on training experience, existing fitness knowledge, or the influence of trends and quick fixes advertised through the media. Amidst this type of conflict with a client, an educational approach is often helpful, especially when it includes an explanation of the why, or the purpose behind choosing a specific exercise or programming concept.
Example of a why for the squat: “Squats are an excellent compound exercise that works lots of muscles at once, saving you time and strengthening your legs faster.”
