Chapter 8 - Exercise Metabolism and Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is ATP?
Adenonsine Triphosphate - the main form of energy in the human body
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy can either be treated nor destroy, only recycled or converted from one form into another
what are macronutrients?
Food substances required in large amounts to supply energy, i.e. protein, carbohydrates, and fats
glucose
A main source of energy, particularly for brain function and higher intensity activity. It can be made in the body from other substrates (fats and amino acids), but a large majority of our daily needs comes from carbs which are broken down and into glucose to digesting.
glycogen
Restored and deliver and muscle Sales and Kim broken down rapidly to provide energy when there is not enough pre-glucose in the blood
the point of which the body uses an equal mix of carbs and fat as fuel sources
VT1
the point where glucose provides nearly all the energy for the activity
VT2
triglycerides
Derive directly from fats containing foods or made by the body to store excess energy when more food is consumed that is needed to support activity
Before can be consumed or stored as fuel and must be broken down into free fatty acids. They are use exclusively and the aerobic metabolic pathway to produce ATP
How many total amino acids?
20
What are essential amino acids?
The body cannot synthesize them on his own and must be consumed in a diet
How many essential amino acids?
9
ATP-PC System
an energy system that provides energy very rapidly for approximately 10-15 seconds via anaerobic metabolism
