Communication
process by which information is exchanged between a sender and a receiver
Problems with Communication (3)
- intended message is different than message sent
- message sent is different than message received
- Message isn’t received/is interrupted
Information Channel
Highest richness with face to face, lowest with written reports
Upward Communication
flows from the bottom of the organization to the top
Horizontal Communication
occurs between departments
Downward Communication
flows from top of organization downwards
Filtering
Distortion or withholding relevant information
MUM effect
the tendency to avoid communicating unfavourable news to others; applies to both upwards and downwards communication
Employee Voice
the constructive expression of disagreement or concern about work unit or organizational practices
High-Context Cultures
social context affects meaning of the message greatly (Japan, Saudi Arabia)
Low-Context Cultures
Meaning of the message is explicitly expressed (North America, Australia)
Active Listening Behaviours
