Leadership
The act of influencing others towards a common goal
Trait theory
Some people are natural born leaders
Task oriented leaders
Direct/close supervision, rules, focus on getting work done, higher performance and productivity
People-oriented leaders
Less direct supervision, fewer rules, focus on concerns and needs, higher group satisfaction, motivation and respect for the leader
Contingency approach to leadership
To be effective, leadership style depends on the specific situation
Path-goal of leadership
Theory that states that the most important aspect of leadership is the follower’s expectations that a task can be completed and that it will lead to rewards
Leadership styles (4)
Directive: specific guidelines, standards, and expectations
Supportive: friendly, concerned about follower well-being
Participative: solicit ideas and suggestions from followers
Achievement-oriented: set challenging goals and encourage goal attainment
Leader-member exchange
In groups and out groups
Transformational leadership theory
Leadership style that empowers group members to work interdependently from the leader by encouraging group cohesion
Four I’s: idealized influence (charisma), inspirational motivation (enthusiasm and commitment), intellectual stimulation (challenging, innovative, restructuring), individual consideration (coaching, mentoring)
Transactional leadership
Leadership based on an exchange process in which followers are rewarded for good performance and punished for bad performance
Authentic leadership
Style of leadership in which leader is true to the self while leading; consistent values, self-awareness, relational transparency, balanced processing
Servant leadership
Leader that puts other’s needs before oneself
