What are the steps of venipuncture?
A
- Review accession test request
- Approach, introduce, identify and prepare patient. Compare name with tube labels and form.
- Verify diet restrictions and latex sensitivity
- Sanitize hands, foam in
- Position patient, apply tourniquet, ask P to make fist
- Select vein, release tourniquet, ask P to open fist
- Clean and air-dry the site
- Prepare equipment and put on gloves if not on
- Reapply tourniquet, uncap and inspect needle
- Ask P to remake a fist, anchor vein and insert needle
- Establish blood flow, release tourniquet, ask P to open fist
- Fill, remove, mix tubes in order of draw or fill syringe
- Place gauze, remove needle, activate safety features, apply pressure
- Discard collection unit, syringe needle, or transfer device
- Label tubes
- Observe special handling instructions
- Check P’s arm (NEVER WIPE) and apply bandage
- Dispose of contaminated materials
- Thank P, remove gloves and sanitize hands
- Transport specimen to lab

Name some of the steps you should do when approaching a patient
A
- Be organized and prepared w/ paperwork
- Look for signs containing P info (ex: DNR, DNAR..)
- Knock lightly on the door
- Ask visitors to step out
- Identify yourself
- Obtain CONSENT for procedure
- Put P at ease, using professional bedside manner

Name some of the steps for Patient Identification
A
- Verify name and DOB
-Check ID bracelet
-Notify nurse of ID discrepancies
-Search for missing IDs
Wake sleeping P
Ask relative or nurse to identify a P who is unconscious, young, mentally incompetent or non-english speaking

Explain what you should do to prepare P for blood draw
A
- Explain the procedure
- Address P inquires
- Handle P objections
- Address difficult patients
- Address objects in P’s mouth (GUM)
