Phlebotomy chair, phlebotomy cart, gloves, antiseptic/hand sanitizer, gauze pads or sharps container
Antiseptic
Prevents sepsis (microorganisms or their toxins in the blood) and is 70% isoprophyl alcohol (most common for routine blood collection) -Safe on human skin
Disinfectants
Removes or kills microorganisms on surfaces & instruments
-Not safe on human skin
Hand Sanitizers
Alcohol based rinses, gels and foams
- can replace hand washing if hands are not visibly soiled
What is the gauge of a needle ?
The diameter of the lumen (hollow part of the needle)
What is the appropriate range for the needle gauges?
20-23
What is the most common needle gauge and needle length?
21 is the most common needle gauge and 1.5 inch is the most common length.

- Bevel is up and there’s no spurs
2. Check rubber stopper over the needle
Where should you put the blood tubes after they’re labeled?
Put blood in bio-hazard bag after draw, never on cart
Vacuum
Negative pressure artificially created by pulling air from tube.
-designed to draw an exact volume of blood into tube
Additive (tubes)
Substance added to tube (ex: anticoagulant)
Nonaddictive tubes
No substance added to tube (rare)
Stoppers
Rubber or rubber with plastic covering
Color coding
Color of stopper usually indicates type of additive
