High intragroup trust
When task conflict increases among group members that have high levels of trust, these groups do not experience significant increases in personal conflict
Low intragroup trust
When task conflict increases among group members that have low levels of trust, these groups are more likely to experience significant increases in personal conflict
Representational gaps
Inconsistent views in the way people define or approach a problem
The greater these gaps, the more teams disagree about a task
Minority/majority conflict in teams
Direct influence: get others to adopt your position
Indirect influence: when people in the majority privately agree w/ the minority
Changing attitudes as a result of influence/pressure
Compliance: changing attitude in response to direct pressure
Conversion: change as a result of their own thinking
Sleeper effect: change in attitude can occur later

People can take five courses or action when they find themselves in conflict
- competition
- collaboration
- compromise
- avoidance
- accommodation
Conflict management: interests, rights, power
Interests approach: focus on satisfying both parties core interests
Rights approach: apply standard of fairness, precedence, contract, or law
Power approach: by force, intimidation, rank, or power
Fairness and conflict
Equity method: benefits & costs should be proportional to members’ contributions
Equality method: members should benefit or suffer equally, regardless of input
Need method: benefits & costs should be proportion to members needs
Distributive Justice
How to best allocate rewards in an org.
Employees who regard their org. to be Market focused tend to be interested in the distributive fairness
Procedural Justice
Concern for how a person is treated by others
Employees who regard their org. to be bureaucratic tend to be interested in the procedural Justice
Place time model of social interaction
Considers teams in terms of their geographic location and temporal relationship
Richness is a term that describes the potential info carrying capacity of a communications medium
Information tech & social behavior
reduced status differences
- equalization of participation
- increased time to make decisions
- trust & rapport are more difficult
