Chapter 7 Textbook Questions Flashcards
What does each model of healthcare contribute to the total healthcare system?
- The medical model focuses on the treatment of diseases and injuries, favouring surgery and drug therapies. Often takes place in a medical facilities
- The social model focuses on personal and family counselling, home care, and adult daycare programs. Tries to keep seniors in their own homes, and often takes place in communities.
- The health promotion model focuses on prevention and self-care. Aims to prevent disease through lifestyle change, increased knowledge about healthy behaviours, and environmental improvements.
Why do some experts feel that the social and health promotion models especially fit an aging society?
The social model has grown in importance as more older people need continuing care or long-term care. The importance of social interaction is crucial.
The health care model often saves the healthcare system money in the long run by keeping people healthier for longer.
Compare the healthcare systems in Canada with the costs in the United States
Canadian healthcare guarantees access to healthcare for all Canadians based on their need, regardless of their ability to pay. This is in contrast with America, where no national system of healthcare exists.
What trend has Canada seen in healthcare costs?
Canada’s healthcare costs have increased over the past few years from what it was before. Canada’s relatively large older population is partly responsible for this high cost as Canada spends more on seniors healthcare than it spends on any other age group.
Why does this trend worry policemakers and economists
Due to the high cost in the last years of life and the care for chronic illness. Due to the aging population, these two issues will become steadly more of a worry
What role does population aging play in the increase in healthcare costs?
Population aging does contribute to increased healthcare costs. An aging population shows that spending on seniors is not growing faster than spending for the population at large.
What are the actual drivers of healthcare cost increases in Canada?
General inflation, healthcare sector inflation, changes in technology, increased use of drugs, and doctors’ treatment choices
What response to an aging population would moderate healthcare costs and provide appropriate care?
Governments should spend money on the right services so more seniors can stay at home and out of hospital longer. Home care, adult daycare, and outpatient treatment can buffer the cost of healthcare for seniors
How does the healthcare system benefit from the shift to community care?
It has lowered the cost of hospital care and decreased the amount of hospital beds needed in hospitals
What effect does the shift to community care have on family caregivers?
It places a greater demand on the family caregivers, as their dependence is now on them to fulfill all the medical needs and caregiving to the senior.
What challenges does the system face as it decreases reliance on institutional care?
Community care has grown more technical and demands more knowledge of medical practices as older people leave hospitals sooner. A lack of funding puts more pressure on community services. In some cases community care simply means more stress for an elderly spouse or an overworked family member caregiver
What benefits would society and individuals gain from a focus on health promotion in later life? Give an example of some research findings that support the health promotion perspective?
Health promotions that includes promotion of good nutrition, exercise, and contact with others with increasing awareness of medical facilities and services. Seniors that have increased awareness of improvements toward self-care can improve an older person’s quality of life. Many studies show that by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise, it can lead to a higher quality of life later on.
Why should health promotion focus on economic inequality and the environment a person lives in as well as on personal health?
A person’s housing, their neighbourhood, and their town and city all affect their health. For a senior, a healthy city would include access to recreational, social and community activities.
