Chapter 7 - Power Supply Flashcards
ATX power supply
Predominant power supply used in modern computers today.
What technically is power supply
Step-Down Transformers. That convert A/C wall outlet power to D/C power for the computer
ATX Power Connector
24 pin connector that connects to the motherboard to supply it power.
What are the three main types of power that power supply provides?
12 volt, 5 volt, and 3.3 volt.
Yellow cord on the power supply is suppling which voltage?
12 volt.
Red cord on the power supply is suppling which voltage.?
5 volt.
Orange cord on the power supply is suppling which voltage?
3.3 volt
ATX12V
4-8 pin power connectors that are extensions to the ATX power, that allow more power to the motherboard.
Molex
Oldest power supply connector. Molex are general purpose power connectors providing 12 and 5 voltage..
Mini-Connector
Original power supply for the floppy drive. Still used occasionally for some devices.
SATA Power Connector
Mainly used to power hard drives. But can be used for optical media.
PCIe Connector
Power connectors used to provide power to video cards.
Modular Power Supply
Power supply with multiple ports which allows you to be able to only plug in the power cords you know you need. Helps with cable management.
Standard Connectors for motherboards are what?
20-24 ATX and 4-8 P4.
Molex and SATA Connectors are what?
Power connectors for peripherals and Hard Drives.
Power supply orientation.
Always good to orient your power supply so fans draw air from system.
How to equal Watts
Volts x Amps = Watts
80 plus rating system
Is a power supply rating. If your power supply has a 80 plus rating you power supply is sure to use 80% proficiency.
Modular vs Solder
Solder will have extra cables doesn’t really help with cable management. But modular is said to reduce efficiency. Purest say to use solder
Rule thumb for wattage with power supply
Get a PSU with a little more wattage then you system needs.
Heat Sink
Number device to remove heat from a device. A heat sink draws heat from electrical components
What does a system do when it overheats
It reboots.
PWM connectors
Connectors to plug fans into the motherboard.
Number one device to die inside your system is what?
The power supply. Takes the abuse from the electricity from your electrical provider.
V~ on volt meter is for what?
AC power
V with straight line and 3 dots on a volt meter is for what?
DC power
Fasting Dying Power supply indicators
Burning smell, smoke, or both.
Slow Dying power supply indicators
unexpected shutdowns, bootup with no power plug back in and it powers up.
Clear CMOS Jumper
Used to reset system setup
